DC’s New Kitchens on the Block @ Mess Hall
On March 19th, Mess Hall in Brookland, DC hosted their annual New Kitchens on the Block event where a bunch of the new restaurants that will be opening this year come together to preview some of what they are going to feature. It was all delicious, and by the time I left, I was full of very good food and mildly intoxicated, thankfully, DC is not without ride sharing services like Lyft and Uber… Check below for some photos from the event.
Squat’n Gobble Spotted in Bluffton, SC
The other week, my day job sent me down to southern South Carolina for a week to help out with our sister company in the area. I was blamed for bringing cold weather with me, but otherwise, I noticed that everyone was so much nicer than I am used to in DC. Having been born here, I am well adjusted to how people in the area can be mean and don’t normally notice it until I am in a place were everyone is so nice. Below you can see some of the interesting, and not so interesting things that I spotted while I was down south. My trip included a side venture down to Savannah the day before St. Patrick’s.
I have been offline for a bit, so I have some catching up to do. A couple of weeks ago, I made it to the opening of the Exposed DC photography exhibit. If you wanted some of the light appetizers, you had to be fast, because they disappeared before I had a chance to get any. I was more focused on the wine, and art, of course. Below are some pictures from the event.
Infinity Mirrors @Hirshhorn
Saturday afternoon I was able to make it through the Infinity Mirrors exhibit at the Hirshhorn Museum. The exhibit was amazing and worth the long wait in lines to see each piece. There were five different rooms and two standalone pieces that make up the exhibit. Each of the rooms has a line you have to wait in to see the room. You go into the rooms in groups of two and they close the door to give you the effect of endless space caused by mirrors on all sides. You have about 20 seconds in each room to view the space and take pictures. It was a lot of fun, but you have to be prepared to stand in a lot of long lines. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Please remember that today (March 1, 2017) is the start of DC’s street sweeping program for the year. Make sure to check the signs when you park and make sure that you are not on a block that is to be cleaned today. After a long “winter” a fair amount of trash builds up along the curbs of the city’s streets. Now we can look forward to cleaner streets, but we have to make sure to move our cars each week.
Monday I had the pleasure of performing my civic duty by missing a day of work to sit in a room and wait around all day to not get picked for a jury. It’s reminiscent of my grade school days in gym class when you are waiting to get picked for a team for dodge ball, only this lasts 8 hours.
To the courts credit, the people involved tend to be very nice and the judges don’t tend to mind if you use wireless devices while you wait around to be called. You just can’t discuss anything about the case. The courthouse does have WiFi as well. It is not going to be as fast as the connection you have at home, but remember, you are not sharing that connection with nearly as many people. When tested, it was comparable to the speed of the connection I have at work. Fast enough to get work done, but not fast enough to get tickets to the Hirshhorn before they sold out.
New since the last time I was just two years ago are the device charging lockers in the jury lounge, and they have a charging station table like the ones that you see in the airport, each with multiple different connection types since we are far from having a universal plug for charging our phones.
